Masters Division?

A buzz has circulated throughout the competitive eating community in recent weeks about a possible "masters division" that would include only retired competitive eaters. But if eaters are retired how can they be part of a masters division?

Some cynics have suggested that the proposed masters division is simply a way to create a Division 2 that will enable certain eaters to return to the table in a less competitive environment.

"While I think the concept of a masters league as proposed is not viable, it is in no way an admission by retired eaters that they cannot compete with a new breed of competitive eater," said IFOCE Chair George Shea. "The retired eaters are giants upon whose shoulders the younger eaters stand."

While the IFOCE has refused to officially consider the league, many eaters refuse to drop the issue.
